Free Long-Tail Keyword Generator
Free long-tail keyword generator that digs two levels deep into live Google Autocomplete and keeps only specific 3+ word search phrases.
What is a long-tail keyword generator?
A long-tail keyword generator finds longer, more specific search phrases, usually three words or more, built around a broad topic. Long-tail keywords have lower search volume each, but they tend to face less competition, show clearer search intent and convert better, which makes them the fastest route to rankings for newer sites.
Most free tools stop at one round of suggestions: type “dog training”, get ten ideas, done. That misses most of the tail. Our tool goes a level deeper. It takes the top suggestions for your seed, then asks Google Autocomplete for suggestions on each of those. “dog training” leads to “dog training collar”, which leads to “dog training collar for small dogs” and “dog training collar without shock”. Those level-2 phrases are where the low-competition gold usually sits.
Everything shorter than three words is dropped automatically, so you are not wading through head terms you already know. Each phrase is then tagged with search intent, a low-competition signal and the parent keyword it came from, so you can trace how Google connects the ideas.
Why long-tail keywords still matter in 2026
Search behaviour keeps moving toward longer queries. People type and speak full questions into Google Search, and AI Overviews and AI Mode answer many of them by quoting pages that address the exact question. A page targeting “how long does it take to crate train a puppy” has a much better shot at being cited than a generic “dog training” guide. Long-tail keywords also feed topical authority: thirty specific, well-answered pages tell Google you cover a subject properly.
Here is a typical result from a Standard run (15 requests) on “dog training” in the US: roughly 120 to 150 long-tail phrases, of which around 40 are four words or longer and a good share are questions. Compare that with 10 suggestions from a single Autocomplete lookup and the value of the second level is obvious.

Short head terms are filtered out automatically. Then narrow further with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8+ word checkboxes.
A heuristic that rewards length, qualifiers, questions and years, and penalises money niches and short “best” terms.
Every phrase is labelled informational, commercial, transactional, local or navigational.
See which level-1 suggestion produced each phrase, which makes topic clustering easier.
One-click SERP and Google Trends links per row, plus Copy, CSV and TXT export.
How to find long-tail keywords with this tool
Enter a broad seed
Use one or two words, such as “espresso” or “dog training”. Very long seeds leave nothing to expand.
Choose market and depth
Pick country and language. Standard uses 15 requests; Deep uses 30 and typically returns about twice as many phrases.
Run and filter
Press Find Long-Tail Keywords. Untick word counts you do not want and filter by intent or low-competition signal.
Check the SERP and export
Open the SERP link for the best candidates. If page one has forums or outdated posts, export it and add it to your content calendar.
How is the low-competition signal calculated?
The signal is a points-based estimate. Phrases gain points for being four or five words or longer, for qualifiers such as “for”, “without” or “under”, for being a question and for including a year. They lose points for expensive niches like insurance or legal, and for short “best” or “top” queries. Strong means three points or more.
| Example phrase | Words | Points | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| best dog training collar | 4 | +1 length −1 “best” = 0 | Weak |
| dog training collar for small dogs | 6 | +2 length +1 qualifier = 3 | Strong |
| how to train a dog to sit | 7 | +2 length +1 question = 3 | Strong |
| dog training classes near me | 5 | +2 length = 2 | Moderate |
| dog bite lawyer near me | 5 | +2 length −1 money niche = 1 | Moderate |
It is a signal, not a verdict. A phrase can score Strong and still be dominated by big sites. Use it to decide which ten keywords to check by hand first, not as proof that a keyword is easy. Real keyword difficulty depends on who ranks and how strong their pages are.
Long-tail vs short-tail keywords: which should you target?
Both, but in the right order. Short-tail terms (one or two words) carry the big search volume and the brutal competition. Long-tail terms win you traffic you can actually get this quarter.
| Short-tail | Long-tail | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | espresso machine | espresso machine for beginners under 300 |
| Search volume | High | Low per keyword, large in total |
| Competition | High | Usually lower |
| Search intent | Vague | Clear |
| Conversion | Lower | Higher |
| Best use | Category and pillar pages | Blog posts, FAQs, product variants |
Our rule for new sites: publish 15 to 25 long-tail pages around one topic before you go after the head term. The long-tail pages earn early traffic and internal links, and by the time you publish the pillar page you have the topical authority to back it up. Pair this tool with our question keyword finder to catch the People Also Ask questions too.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a long-tail keyword?
In practice, a search phrase of three or more words with a specific intent, such as “dog training collar for small dogs”. Strictly, long-tail refers to low search volume rather than length, but the two usually go together.
Is this long-tail keyword generator free?
Yes. No sign-up, no credits. Each run uses 15 or 30 live requests and there is a fair-use cap of about 60 requests per minute per visitor.
Why does the tool go two levels deep?
One level of Autocomplete shows the most popular continuations. The second level shows what people type after those, which is where the longer and less competitive phrases appear.
Does it show search volume or keyword difficulty?
No exact numbers. It shows a low-competition signal, which is a labelled estimate. Check search volume in Google Keyword Planner and look at the live SERP before you commit.
How many long-tail keywords will I get?
It depends on the seed and market. Popular English seeds usually return 100 to 300 phrases on Deep. Niche or non-English seeds return fewer.
Can I use long-tail keywords for PPC?
Yes. Long-tail PPC keywords often have a lower CPC and a higher conversion rate. Export the CSV, keep the commercial and transactional rows, and check bids in Google Keyword Planner.
