Free HowTo Schema Generator
Build valid HowTo schema in JSON-LD with steps, sections, time, cost, supplies and tools, plus matching visible HTML. Copy or download it.
What is HowTo schema?
HowTo schema is structured data from Schema.org that labels a step-by-step guide: its name, the steps in order, time needed, cost, supplies and tools. Written in JSON-LD, it tells search engines and AI systems exactly which text is an instruction and in what sequence, even though Google no longer shows HowTo rich results.
This free HowTo schema generator writes that markup for you. Fill in the task, add your steps, and the tool returns a JSON-LD block plus a matching ordered list of HTML steps with anchor ids. The two outputs agree with each other, which matters more than most people think: structured data should describe content that a visitor can actually see on the page.
The validation panel checks the things that usually go wrong when people hand-write HowTo markup. Missing text on a step, a total time typed as “30 mins” instead of PT30M, a cost with a dollar sign in it, duplicate anchors, relative image paths. Each issue is flagged as an error or a suggestion before you paste anything into your CMS.
Does Google still show HowTo rich results?
No. Google announced in August 2023 that it would reduce HowTo rich results, and by September 2023 they stopped appearing on both mobile and desktop. The HowTo report was also removed from Search Console. Adding HowTo schema today will not give you step thumbnails in Google Search results.
We would rather say that plainly than sell you a rich result that no longer exists. So why build the markup at all? Three reasons hold up in 2026.
- Machine understanding. Structured data removes guesswork. A parser does not have to infer that your third paragraph is step three; the markup states it, along with the tools and the duration.
- AI answers. Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Bing Copilot and other answer engines summarise procedures constantly. Clean, ordered, clearly labelled steps are easier to lift and cite accurately than steps buried in long paragraphs. Schema is not a guaranteed ranking or citation signal, but it supports the content structure those systems already reward.
- Other consumers of Schema.org. Search engines other than Google, voice assistants, internal site search and knowledge graph tools can read HowTo markup. Schema.org itself still defines the type.
The honest summary: treat HowTo schema as a cheap, low-risk layer of structured data for answer engine optimization (AEO), not as a traffic trick. If a page is not genuinely a set of instructions, skip it.
Features of this HowTo schema generator
ISO 8601 time builder
Type hours and minutes; the tool writes PT1H30M and normalises 95 minutes into PT1H35M.
Dynamic steps
Add, remove and reorder steps. Each one takes a name, instruction text, an anchor id and an optional image.
HowToSection support
Group long procedures into phases such as Prepare, Install and Test. Consecutive steps with the same section name are grouped.
Cost, supplies and tools
Outputs MonetaryAmount, HowToSupply and HowToTool objects with the right types.
Validation with a score
Errors and suggestions are listed in plain English, with a score out of 100 so you can see when the markup is clean.
Visible HTML that matches
Get an ordered list with id anchors, so each step URL in the schema points to a real element on the page.
How to use the HowTo schema generator
Describe the task
Enter the HowTo name, a one or two sentence description, the page URL and a main image of the finished result.
Add time, cost, supplies and tools
Type hours and minutes for total time, a plain number for cost, then list supplies and tools one per line.
Write each step
Give every step a short name and one or two sentences of instructions. Turn on sections if the job has clear phases.
Generate, fix and copy
Click Generate, fix anything marked red, then copy the JSON-LD and the visible HTML into your page and test it.
Which HowTo properties should you fill in?
Schema.org lists a lot of optional properties. In practice a small set does the heavy lifting. Here is how we prioritise them when we add structured data for clients.
| Property | Type | Priority | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| name | Text | Must have | Match the page heading. “How to fix a leaking tap”, not “Plumbing tips”. |
| step | HowToStep or HowToSection | Must have | Two or more steps, in the same order as on the page. |
| step.text | Text | Must have | The full instruction. Keep it under about 50 words per step. |
| step.name / url / image | Text / URL / URL | Recommended | Short label, an anchor link to the step, and a photo if one exists. |
| totalTime | Duration | Recommended | ISO 8601: PT45M, PT2H, PT1H15M. Be realistic for a first-timer. |
| estimatedCost | MonetaryAmount | Optional | Numeric value plus ISO currency code. No symbols. |
| supply / tool | HowToSupply / HowToTool | Optional | Supplies are used up (glue, washers); tools are kept (spanner, drill). |
| image / description | ImageObject / Text | Recommended | Show the finished result and summarise the outcome. |
A worked example from the Load Example button: a five-step tap repair split into two sections, 30 minutes total (PT30M), estimated cost 5 USD, one tool list and three supplies. The generator returns two HowToSection objects with three and two steps, each step linking to #turn-off-water, #swap-washer and so on.
How do you write steps that answer engines can use?
The markup is only as good as the instructions inside it. A few habits make a visible difference when we compare which guides get quoted in AI Overviews and featured snippets:
- Start each step with a verb. “Close the isolation valve” beats “The first thing you will want to do is find the valve”.
- One action per step. If a step needs “and then” twice, split it.
- Put the steps near the top. A 40 to 60 word answer followed by the numbered list works for featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice search alike.
- Name things the way people search. Use the words in the query, then the specific part names. That helps entity SEO without stuffing.
- Keep the page and schema in sync. If you edit a step in the article, regenerate the JSON-LD. Mismatched structured data is a common reason markup gets ignored.
If you also want an answer box above the steps, our Direct Answer Generator writes 40 to 60 word answer variants, and the FAQ Schema Generator handles the questions section further down the page.
HowTo schema FAQ
Is HowTo schema still worth adding in 2026?
Yes, if the page really is a set of instructions. Google stopped showing HowTo rich results in September 2023, so there is no visual reward in Google Search. The markup still gives machines an exact, ordered description of the steps, which supports AI answers, other search engines and structured data tools.
Will HowTo schema cause a penalty now that it is deprecated?
No. Google said unsupported structured data is simply not used for rich results. Valid HowTo markup that matches visible content is harmless. What can cause problems is markup describing content that is not on the page.
What is the correct format for totalTime?
Use an ISO 8601 duration. PT30M means 30 minutes, PT2H means two hours and PT1H15M means one hour fifteen minutes. This generator builds the value from the hours and minutes you type, so you never have to write it by hand.
What is the difference between HowToSupply and HowToTool?
A supply is consumed or becomes part of the result, such as paint, screws or a washer. A tool is used and kept, such as a screwdriver or a drill. List each item once, in the group where it belongs.
Should I use HowTo schema or FAQ schema?
Use HowTo for a sequence of steps that leads to one outcome. Use FAQPage for separate questions with separate answers. A long guide can carry both, as long as each block of markup matches its own visible section on the page.
Where do I paste the JSON-LD?
Paste the script block anywhere in the page HTML, usually just before the closing body tag or in a custom HTML block in WordPress. Then run the URL through the Google Rich Results Test or the Schema.org validator to confirm it parses without errors.
