Free Local Keyword Research Tool
Our free local keyword research tool turns your services and service area into hundreds of local keyword ideas grouped by search intent, with difficulty estimates, check links and a keyword-to-page map.
What is local keyword research?
Local keyword research is the process of finding the search terms people use when they want a product or service in a specific place, such as “plumber in Austin”, “dentist near me” or “emergency electrician 78704”. It combines your services, locations and intent modifiers so you can target the searches most likely to turn into calls and visits.
Local searches behave differently from national ones. Google shows a map-based local pack for many of them, ranks businesses on relevance, distance and prominence, and personalizes results by the searcher’s location. That means the keywords you choose for local SEO should reflect real services, real place names and the urgency behind each search. A good local keyword list tells you which pages to build, which headings to write and which questions to answer on your site and your Google Business Profile.
Features of this local keyword tool
Most free local keyword generators simply glue a city onto a service. This tool goes further and organizes every idea by intent so you know what to do with it.
Service + city, “near me”, best and top rated, cheap and affordable, emergency and 24-hour, cost and price, questions, comparisons, and neighborhood or ZIP keywords.
The tool detects whether you entered a provider (“electrician”) or a service (“drain cleaning”) and writes natural phrases such as “best electricians in Dallas”.
Each keyword gets an estimated buyer-intent score, an estimated difficulty score and an opportunity score, clearly labelled as rule-based estimates.
Open any keyword in Google Search, Google Trends or Google Keyword Planner to validate demand and see who already ranks.
Get a suggested URL, page type, primary keyword and secondary keywords for every page, which helps you avoid cannibalization.
Filter by group, service, difficulty or text, then copy the list or download it as CSV or TXT for your spreadsheet or SEO platform.
How to use the local keyword research tool
You can build a complete local keyword plan in about five minutes.
1. Enter your services
List the services you actually offer, one per line, in the language customers use. Think “AC repair” rather than “HVAC remediation solutions”.
2. Add your locations
Type your main city and region, then add the neighborhoods, suburbs or ZIP codes you serve. A service area business should list only areas it genuinely covers.
3. Choose intent types and generate
Tick the keyword types that fit your business. Skip emergency keywords if you do not offer urgent or after-hours service. Then click Generate Keywords.
4. Validate, map and export
Use the check links to confirm real demand, review the keyword-to-page map, and export the filtered list as CSV to plan content and Google Ads campaigns.
Which local keyword types should you target first?
Not every keyword deserves its own page. Start with the groups closest to a purchase decision, then support them with helpful content. The table below explains how each intent group is usually handled in a local SEO strategy.
| Keyword group | Example | Typical intent | Best place to target it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency / 24-hour | emergency plumber Austin | Urgent, ready to call | Dedicated emergency page, call button, accurate GBP hours |
| Service + city | roof repair in Denver | Transactional | Service page or service + city landing page |
| “Near me” | dentist near me | Transactional | Google Business Profile, reviews, strong service page |
| Best / top rated | best family lawyer in Lahore | Commercial | Service page with reviews, credentials and proof |
| Cost / price | kitchen remodel cost Toronto | Researching budget | Pricing page or cost guide article |
| Questions | how long does drain cleaning take | Informational | FAQ section or blog guide |
| Comparison | tankless vs tank water heater | Comparing options | Comparison article linking to the service page |
| Neighborhood / ZIP | electrician 78704 | Hyper-local | Area page only if it has unique local content |
How the estimates are calculated
This tool does not connect to a paid keyword database, so it never shows invented search volumes. Instead it uses transparent rules. Estimated intent rises with urgency and purchase words such as “emergency”, “near me” and “hire”. Estimated difficulty rises for short, broad phrases and large metros, and falls for longer phrases, neighborhoods and ZIP codes, where fewer businesses compete. The opportunity score blends both, so long, high-intent, hyper-local phrases rise to the top. Treat these numbers as a prioritization aid, then confirm demand in Google Keyword Planner, Google Trends and your Google Search Console queries.
Local keyword research tips that improve rankings
- Match keywords to real pages. One primary keyword per URL keeps your service pages, location pages and blog posts from competing with each other.
- Don’t stuff “near me” into copy. Google already knows where the searcher is. Win near me searches with a complete Google Business Profile, consistent NAP (name, address, phone) details, steady online reviews and a relevant service page.
- Use the customer’s vocabulary. Read your reviews, call notes and Search Console queries. Customers often say “AC” while businesses write “air conditioning”.
- Put the city in key places naturally. Use it in the title tag, H1, opening paragraph, image alt text where relevant and your local business schema, not in every sentence.
- Plan for multi-location SEO. If you have several branches, repeat this research per location and give each location page unique details, photos and reviews.
- Reuse keywords beyond your website. Question keywords make excellent Google Business Profile posts and FAQ answers, and service keywords guide your GBP services list.
Frequently asked questions
Is this local keyword research tool really free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. Your services and locations are not sent to any server.
Does the tool show search volume?
No. It shows rule-based estimates of intent, difficulty and opportunity, not search volume. Use the Keyword Planner and Trends links to check real demand for each keyword.
How do I rank for “near me” keywords?
Rank for near me searches by optimizing your Google Business Profile, earning reviews, keeping NAP details consistent across local citations and building a relevant service page. Proximity to the searcher also matters.
Should I create a page for every city or ZIP code?
Only when you can add unique, useful content for that area. Thin pages that only swap the place name can be treated as doorway pages and may hurt your local SEO.
How many local keywords should one page target?
Target one primary keyword and a handful of closely related secondary keywords per page. Questions and cost terms usually belong in FAQ sections or separate guides.
Can I use these keywords for Google Ads?
Yes. Export the CSV, keep the high-intent groups, and add match types with our city based keyword generator. Add negative keywords such as “jobs” or “DIY” to avoid wasted clicks.
