What is a city based keyword generator?

A city based keyword generator is a tool that automatically combines your service keywords with city names, areas and modifiers to create every useful local search phrase, such as “roof repair Austin” or “best roof repair in Round Rock”. It saves hours of manual typing when you plan local SEO pages or Google Ads campaigns.

Customers search in many different word orders. One person types “Dallas plumber”, another types “plumber in Dallas TX”, and a third types “emergency plumber near Dallas”. Covering these variations by hand across ten services and twenty cities quickly becomes hundreds of phrases. This keyword mixer builds the full matrix in seconds, removes duplicates, flags keywords that break Google Ads limits and exports everything in a format you can paste straight into your campaigns or content plan.

Features

Built for agencies, PPC managers and business owners who manage several service areas.

11 keyword patterns

Service + city, city + service, “in”, “near”, state abbreviations, modifier prefixes and suffixes, and optional “near me” variations.

Country city presets

Load about 20 major cities for the United States, United Kingdom, Pakistan, UAE, Canada or Australia with one click, with state and province codes where relevant.

Match types for Google Ads

Output broad, “phrase” and [exact] match versions of every keyword, or any combination you choose.

Deduplication and limits

Duplicate phrases are removed automatically, and keywords longer than 80 characters or 10 words are flagged before upload.

Ad group structure

Each service and city pair becomes a tightly themed ad group, which supports relevant ads and city-specific landing pages.

Copy and export

Copy the list, download a TXT file or download a Google Ads Editor CSV with Campaign, Ad Group, Keyword and Criterion Type columns.

How to use the city based keyword generator

Four quick steps from a blank list to an import-ready file.

1. Add services

Enter each service or product on its own line. Keep them short, two to four words, so combined keywords stay natural.

2. Add cities or load a preset

Type the cities, suburbs or neighborhoods you serve, or add a country preset. Write “City, ST” when you want state patterns such as “plumber Houston TX”.

3. Pick patterns and match types

Choose word orders and modifiers, then tick the match types you need for Google Ads. Leave match types as they are if you only need SEO ideas.

4. Generate and export

Click Generate Keywords, review the preview and warnings, then copy the list or download the TXT or Google Ads Editor CSV file.

Google Ads match types explained for local campaigns

Match types control how closely a search must match your keyword before your ad can show. For local service campaigns, tighter match types usually waste less budget, while broad match can discover new searches when paired with good conversion tracking and negative keywords.

Match typeSyntaxExampleCan match searches like
Broad matchkeywordroof repair austinRelated searches, synonyms and wider topics, such as “fix leaking roof Austin”
Phrase match“keyword”“roof repair austin”Searches that include the meaning of the phrase, such as “best roof repair Austin TX”
Exact match[keyword][roof repair austin]Searches with the same meaning or intent, such as “austin roof repair”

Google Ads also lets you target locations directly, so a city in the keyword is not required for ads to appear there. City keywords still help because they capture people searching for a place they are not in yet, they raise ad relevance, and they let you send each click to the matching city landing page. Always add negative keywords such as “jobs”, “salary”, “training” and “DIY” to block searches that will never become customers.

How many keywords will you get?

The total is services × locations × patterns, plus one extra set for every modifier pattern. For example, 3 services and 5 cities with 5 basic patterns create up to 75 keywords. Add 3 modifiers to one modifier pattern and you get 45 more. Turn on phrase and exact match and each keyword appears twice. The generator removes duplicates automatically, so a pattern like “{service} {city}” and a lowercase variation never appear twice. Keep ad groups small: one service and one city per ad group makes it easier to write ad copy that mentions the city and to send each click to the most relevant landing page.

How should you use city keywords for local SEO?

For organic local SEO, a generated list is a planning tool, not a list of pages to publish. Use it to decide which locations deserve a dedicated page and which belong in a service area section.

  • Create pages only for real service areas. Each location page should include unique details: local projects, photos, team members, reviews from that area and directions or parking notes.
  • Avoid doorway pages. Google’s spam policies treat many near-identical pages that only swap the city name as doorway pages. Fewer, stronger pages win.
  • Support pages with your Google Business Profile. Rankings in the local pack and on Google Maps depend on relevance, distance and prominence, so keep categories, services and service areas accurate.
  • Keep NAP consistent. Your name, address and phone number should match across your site, local citations, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places.
  • Add local business schema. Mark up each location page with Schema.org LocalBusiness data so search engines understand which area each page serves.

Frequently asked questions

Is the city based keyword generator free?

Yes. It is completely free, has no daily limits and needs no account. All keywords are generated in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How many keywords can I generate at once?

Up to 20,000 unique keywords per run, before match types are applied. For large lists, split services or regions into separate campaigns for easier management.

Does the tool show search volume?

No. It builds keyword combinations only. Paste the list into Google Keyword Planner to check search volume and suggested bids for your target locations.

Can I import the CSV into Google Ads Editor?

Yes. The CSV uses Campaign, Ad Group, Keyword and Criterion Type columns. Check the campaign name and ad groups in Google Ads Editor before posting changes.

Should I include the state abbreviation in keywords?

Include it when people commonly search that way or when a city name exists in several states, such as Springfield. Write locations as “City, ST” to enable those patterns.

Can I use city keywords on many landing pages?

Yes, but each page must offer unique, helpful content for that area. Pages that only change the city name risk being treated as doorway pages.
