Free NAP Consistency Checker (Name, Address, Phone)
Use this free NAP consistency checker to compare your business name, address and phone number across every listing, get a consistency score and a ready-to-use fix list.
What is NAP consistency?
NAP consistency means your business Name, Address and Phone number appear exactly the same on your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, social profiles and directories. Consistent NAP data helps search engines trust that every listing describes the same business, which supports local SEO and keeps customers from calling wrong numbers.
Search engines build a picture of your business from many sources. When one directory says “Suite 200”, another drops the suite, and a third still shows the phone number you used three years ago, the signals conflict. Google states that local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence is informed by information Google finds about a business across the web, including links, articles and directories. Clean, matching local citations make that information easier to trust.
A NAP consistency checker compares each listing against one master version of your details. This tool normalizes formatting, measures how similar each field really is, and separates real errors from style differences.
Features of this NAP checker
Built for agencies and owners who want a fast, honest NAP audit without paying for a citation tracking subscription.
Street/St, Avenue/Ave, Suite/Ste/#, North/N, state names and ZIP+4 are standardized before comparison, so formatting is not mistaken for an error.
Every phone number is converted to the international E.164 format (for example +12175550142), so “(217) 555-0142” and “217.555.0142” match while a different number is caught.
Name and address get a 0–100% similarity score using edit distance and token matching, which spots typos such as “Brite” vs “Bright”.
Wrong street numbers, wrong postal codes, missing suite numbers and mismatched phone numbers are flagged as high priority.
Words that do not appear in your master NAP are highlighted, so you can see exactly what is wrong on each listing.
Copy a plain-language fix list for your team or download a CSV with every score and issue for your local SEO audit records.
How to use the NAP consistency checker
Four steps, about two minutes for a typical business.
Set your master NAP
Enter the official name, full address and primary phone exactly as they appear on your Google Business Profile and website footer. This is the version every other listing should copy.
Collect your listings
Look up your business on Yelp, Facebook, Bing Places, Apple Maps, industry directories and data aggregators. Our Business Listing Checker gives you one-click search links for this.
Paste and check
Paste one listing per line in the format source | name | address | phone, choose your country calling code and click Check NAP Consistency.
Fix and re-check
Work through the fix list, starting with red items. Update each listing at the source, then paste the new data to confirm your score has improved.
How does the checker score NAP data?
Each listing receives a score out of 100: the name is weighted 35%, the address 40% and the phone number 25%. Phone numbers either match in E.164 format or they do not, because a single wrong digit sends calls elsewhere. A wrong street number or postal code caps the listing at 80, since those errors can point maps to the wrong place. The overall score is the average across all listings.
| Difference found | Example | Severity | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abbreviation or punctuation | Street vs St, Suite 200 vs #200 | Low (format only) | Optional: align with master format |
| Legal suffix | Dental Care vs Dental Care LLC | Low | Use the name customers see on your signage |
| Missing suite or unit | 1250 W Main St (no Ste 200) | Medium | Add the suite to the street line |
| Name variation or typo | Brite Smile Dental | High | Correct to the exact brand name |
| Wrong street number or postal code | 1520 instead of 1250 | High | Correct immediately; also check data aggregators |
| Different phone number | Old number or call-tracking number | High | Use the primary number; keep tracking numbers secondary |
A score of 95 or higher means your NAP data is in excellent shape. Between 85 and 94, a few listings need cleanup. Below 85, inconsistent citations are likely confusing customers and weakening the trust signals behind your Google Maps ranking.
Why NAP consistency matters for local SEO
Local citations are mentions of your business name, address and phone number on other websites. They are one of the inputs search engines use to confirm that a business is real, where it is located and how to contact it. Inconsistent NAP data does not usually cause a dramatic ranking drop by itself, but it creates three practical problems.
- Lost customers. People who find an old phone number or wrong address on a directory call a dead line or drive to the wrong place, and many will not try again.
- Duplicate listings. A slightly different name or address can make platforms create a second profile, which splits online reviews and can trigger duplicate-listing issues on Google Maps.
- Weaker trust signals. Conflicting data makes it harder for Google, Apple and Bing to connect mentions of your brand, which matters for prominence in the local pack and near me searches.
Best practices for a consistent NAP
- Pick one canonical format and document it, including how you write the suite and whether you use abbreviations. Your website footer and Google Business Profile should match it exactly.
- Use a local primary phone number on every listing. If you use call tracking, add tracking numbers only as secondary numbers where the platform allows it.
- Do not add keywords to your business name. Keyword-stuffed names break consistency and violate Google Business Profile guidelines.
- Fix the sources, not just the symptoms. Data aggregators and major platforms feed many smaller sites, so correct them first. Use our Local Citation Finder to find the right directories for your country.
- Mark your website up with schema. LocalBusiness structured data repeats your NAP in a machine-readable format; build it with the Local Business Schema Generator.
- Re-check every quarter and after any change, as part of a wider local SEO audit.
Service area businesses that hide their address on Google should still keep the name and phone number identical everywhere, and use the same address on directories that require one.
Frequently asked questions
What does NAP stand for in local SEO?
NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. Some marketers use NAPW to include the website URL. Together these details identify a local business across search engines, maps and directories.
Does “Street” vs “St” hurt my rankings?
No. Search engines understand common abbreviations, so this tool marks them as format-only differences. Wrong street numbers, postal codes, names and phone numbers are the inconsistencies that matter.
Is this NAP consistency checker really free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser. The data you paste is not sent to or stored on our servers.
Can the tool find my listings automatically?
No. It compares listings you paste, which keeps it free and private. To find listings quickly, use our Business Listing Checker, which builds one-click searches for major platforms.
What is E.164 phone format?
E.164 is the international phone number standard: a plus sign, the country code and the national number with no spaces, such as +12175550142. Converting every number to E.164 makes reliable comparison possible.
How often should I check NAP consistency?
Check at least once a quarter, and always after moving, rebranding or changing your phone number. Old data can resurface from data aggregators, so recheck a few weeks after making corrections.
