What is a Duplicate Content Checker?

A duplicate content checker measures how much text two or more pages share. It strips menus, headers and footers, breaks the main content into 5-word phrases and calculates the overlap, so you can see which pages compete with each other in Google.

Duplicate and near-duplicate pages split ranking signals, cause “Duplicate without user-selected canonical” in Search Console and waste crawl budget. This tool checks internal duplicates on your own site. To find copies of your content on other websites, use a plagiarism checker.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a duplicate content penalty?

No, Google does not penalise normal duplicate content. It picks one version to show and filters the rest, which can be the wrong page and splits your ranking signals.

How much similarity is too much?

Over 80% means the pages are near-duplicates. 50–80% usually means a lot of shared template text. Aim for a clearly unique main section on every page.

Does this check other websites?

No. This tool compares pages on your own site. Use a plagiarism checker to find copies on other domains.

Should I use canonical or 301?

Use a 301 when the duplicate page is not needed anymore. Use a canonical when both URLs must stay accessible.

Why does it read my sitemap?

The sitemap lists your indexable pages, which are the ones that matter for duplicate content. If no sitemap is found, the tool crawls your internal links instead.
